California approves Waymo to expand driverless service
The CPUC's consumer protection division approved Waymo on 14 August to expand driverless service in California. The Los Angeles Times counts 18 counties.
On 14 August 2026, the Consumer Protection and Enforcement Division of the California Public Utilities Commission approved Waymo's Advice Letter 0004 and supplemental 0004-A, effective that day. The letter authorizes expanded driverless passenger service in additional parts of Northern and Southern California and use of Waymo's Ojai vehicle platform. The Los Angeles Times reports the approval covers 18 counties, including San Diego and Sacramento, and lets Waymo more than triple its service area around Los Angeles and San Francisco. Waymo said expansion will be gradual and guided by its safety framework. We file this because a regulator's approval is the permission Waymo needs before it can grow in a state. How we read it: a big door opened, but permission is not service. What would change this: launch dates slipping or a new safety action. Why it matters to you: if you live in a big California area, a driverless taxi may become an option near you.
What this doesn't prove
As of 14 August. Permission is not service: Waymo said, per the Los Angeles Times, that the rollout will be gradual. The 18-county count is the Los Angeles Times', not the letter's.
