Google commits EUR 13 billion to Finland for data center spending and a nuclear power deal
Google said on 9 September it will put EUR 13 billion in Finland over two years, including data center spending, a nuclear power deal and a battery.
On 9 September 2026 Google said it will put EUR 13 billion in digital infrastructure, clean energy and local partnerships across Finland over 2027 and 2028, its largest single funding plan in Europe. Google's Finnish partner Fortum said the package includes data center and supporting infrastructure spending in Hamina, Muhos, Vaala and Kajaani. Google also signed a 22-year agreement with Fortum for up to 50% of the Loviisa nuclear plant's capacity and contracted a new 94-megawatt battery system. No data-center power size is given. We file this because it is a company-confirmed commitment with a hard figure for AI computing capacity. How we read it: Google is locking in power and sites in Europe for the next build-out, though the sum covers more than data centers. What would change this: delays from the environmental reviews already ordered at two of the sites. Why it matters to you: it shows where and how the big firms are securing power for AI.
What this doesn't prove
Company blog and a Fortum release. The EUR 13 billion mixes data centers, clean energy and community projects, with no split or power size. A Finnish agency has separately told Google's subsidiary to pause site work at two of the sites until environmental reviews are done.
