SoftBank is seeking up to about $100bn from Gulf investors for a new AI fund, the FT reports
The FT, citing people familiar, says early talks include the UAE. The fund would acquire companies and improve them with AI. SoftBank declined to comment.
On 9 October 2026 the Financial Times reported, citing people familiar with the matter, that SoftBank Group is seeking to raise up to $100 billion from Gulf investors for a new AI-focused fund. Reuters carried the FT report the same day. SoftBank did not respond to Reuters, which said it could not immediately verify the report.
Per the FT via Japan Times (Bloomberg), the fund would acquire companies and use AI and machines, including from SoftBank's robotics arm Roze, to improve operations. Masayoshi Son has held early talks with potential investors, including in the United Arab Emirates. A SoftBank representative declined to comment.
Why it matters. SoftBank is already on the map, and this is a new fundraising effort, separate from its recent high-yield bond sale.
How we read it. Minor. SoftBank stays yellow. These are early talks from anonymous sources, and money being sought isn't money raised, so nothing on the map moves.
What would change this. Named LP commitments, a fund close, SoftBank confirmation, or a clear pull or downsize of the reported ask.
What this evidence does not establish
Early talks, not a closed fund. Size, investors, timing and structure come from people familiar. SoftBank declined to comment, and Reuters could not verify the report. The FT original is paywalled, so this relies on Reuters and Bloomberg accounts of it. Share-price moves excluded.
What to watch next

- Any announced size, structure or first close below or above the reported ~$100bn ask
- Clear delay, pull or downsize of the reported fundraising
- Overlap with SoftBank robotics (Roze) or other SoftBank AI financing news
