AEP plans a $4 billion fuel cell plant in Wyoming to power Google for 20 years

AEP says it will spend about $4 billion on a 702 MW Bloom fuel cell plant near Cheyenne, Wyoming, with Google taking the power for 20 years.

On 14 October 2026 American Electric Power (AEP), a big US electric utility, said it plans to invest about 4 billion dollars in a new power plant near Cheyenne, Wyoming. The plant will have 702 megawatts of capacity (a megawatt measures how much electricity can flow at once). Google has signed a 20-year power purchase agreement, a long contract to take the plant's electricity.

The plant uses fuel cells made with Bloom Energy's technology. A fuel cell makes electricity through a chemical reaction instead of burning fuel, and these usually run on natural gas. AEP says construction should start in 2026 and the plant should be fully running by the end of 2028. AEP owns about 92% of the project.

AEP says the plant supports Google's growing energy needs around Cheyenne, and that it follows the agreements Google signed with the local utility Black Hills, which took effect on 30 September.

Why we file it. A utility plans to build new power for one tech company under a long contract, using fuel cells that can be set up on site.

How we read it. AEP turns green on the map, and Google stays green. Bloom Energy's technology is named, but Bloom has not put out its own numbers on this plant, so its color does not change yet.

Why it matters to you: the AI tools you use need huge amounts of electricity, and deals like this show who is paying to build that power and how long they are signing up for.

What would change this: construction slipping past 2026, the plant missing its end-2028 target, or the contract being changed.

What this evidence does not establish

AEP did not share the contract price or how much of Google's planned use near Cheyenne this plant covers. The plant is planned, not built. Google and Bloom Energy did not post their own releases that we found. AEP's carbon capture plans are plans only. Share-price moves are not part of this signal.

What to watch next

  • Construction starting at the Cheyenne fuel cell plant in 2026
  • Whether Bloom Energy discloses its order for the plant
  • Any state approvals or filings tied to the project
  • More power deals for Google's Cheyenne-area data center plans
