AXT signs a six-year capacity deal with Lumentum, backed by two $43.5 million deposits

AXT signed a six-year deal to reserve indium phosphide wafer capacity for Lumentum, backed by two deposits of $43.5 million each.

On 29 July 2026 AXT, a US optical wafer maker, disclosed a six-year capacity reservation agreement, signed on 26 July, with Lumentum for indium phosphide wafers. Lumentum agreed to pay a $43.5 million deposit within 30 business days and a second of the same size, with timing and terms to be set during calendar 2028. The deposits become shipment credits. Lumentum owes any shortfall against its annual purchase commitment, subject to certain exceptions. AXT must refund any unapplied deposit if it fails to deliver the minimum capacity and does not cure the breach. AXT's second-quarter revenue was $47.6 million, up from $18.0 million, and its CEO tied the jump to data center optical demand (AXT SEC filings, 29 and 30 July 2026, and Semiconductor Today).

Why we file it. A long contract and large deposits show tight supply of AI optics parts.

How we read it. A positive signal, but delivery still has to happen.

Why it matters to you: fast AI networks need optical chips made on these wafers.

What this doesn't prove

Company filing: the second deposit's timing and terms are still to be set during calendar 2028. Deposits are applied as shipment credits. AI wording is from AXT's Q2 release.
