Broadcom is arranging more than $50bn of financing for OpenAI's custom AI chips

The WSJ, citing people familiar, says Apollo and Blackstone are among lenders in talks. The talks are early and the size could still change.

On 7 October 2026 the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the discussions, that Broadcom has spent recent weeks arranging more than $50 billion of financing for the custom AI chip it is developing with OpenAI. Apollo Global Management and Blackstone are among the lenders in talks.

As reported by investingLive, the talks are at an early stage and the size could change. The deal is expected to close before the end of the year and could cover several gigawatts of OpenAI chip capacity. It would build on the partnership the two companies announced a year ago to develop 10 gigawatts of OpenAI's custom chips with Broadcom networking.

The same report said Oracle is separately in talks with Apollo and Goldman Sachs to finance a large chip purchase, most likely through a separate company that buys the chips and leases them to Oracle over time. No size was reported.

We file it because a major outlet reports the deal from people familiar with it, and OpenAI and Broadcom are both on the map.

Minor, and against infrastructure economics: a lab that cannot pay for chips up front, as the WSJ puts it, is having its chip supplier line up lenders for it. The money is there, but more of the build-out is being paid for with debt. Confidence medium, because the terms rest on unnamed sources and nothing is signed. No color changes.

What would change this: Broadcom or OpenAI confirming the financing, the debt launching or pricing, or the talks ending or shrinking.

What this evidence does not establish

Talks, not a signed deal: the talks are early and the size could change. The amount, lenders and timing come from people familiar, reported by the WSJ; Broadcom, OpenAI, Apollo and Blackstone have not confirmed them. The Oracle financing has no reported size or chip count. Share-price moves are excluded.

What to watch next

  • Broadcom, OpenAI or a lender confirming the financing
  • The debt launching, and at what size and price
  • Talks ending, or the size or structure changing
  • Oracle's chip financing being sized or signed
