OpenAI to take dedicated AI compute from two Firmus sites in Malaysia
Firmus and OpenAI said on 8 September that OpenAI will contract dedicated AI compute from two Firmus sites in Malaysia, lifting Firmus above 900 MW contracted.
On 8 September 2026 Firmus and OpenAI announced a multi-year strategic partnership under which OpenAI will contract dedicated AI compute capacity from two Firmus AI Factory sites in Malaysia and become an anchor customer of Firmus. Firmus said its total contracted capacity across all customers now stands at more than 900 MW, and that the sites will use NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72 systems. The release gives no size or value for OpenAI's share. We file this because it is a company-confirmed contract with a hard figure for the developer. How we read it: OpenAI is adding capacity in Southeast Asia from a developer still building its sites. What would change this: delays at the Malaysian sites. Why it matters to you: it shows an AI lab spreading its computing supply across countries and developers.
What this doesn't prove
Company release by Firmus, with a quote from an OpenAI vice president. The release gives no megawatt figure or value for OpenAI's contract. The 900 MW is Firmus's total across all customers. Five of Firmus's seven sites are under development.
