Qualcomm and Amazon agree to build AI data-center chips, with a warrant tied to up to $60 billion of purchases

Qualcomm will work with Amazon on custom AI data-center chips and gave Amazon a warrant that vests as Amazon purchases, up to $60 billion.

On 8 September 2026 Qualcomm, a US chip maker known mainly for phone chips, announced a multi-generation collaboration with Amazon on custom chips for large AI data centers, working together on AI inference, which means running trained AI models. A filing shows that on 3 September Qualcomm gave Amazon a warrant for up to 25 million Qualcomm shares. It vests in tranches tied to commercial arrangements, binding purchase orders and actual purchases of Qualcomm server chip products, up to $60 billion of payments. 3.75 million shares vested on issue, based on initial purchase commitments (Qualcomm SEC filing, 8 September 2026).

Why we file it. A major chip company is entering AI data centers with a named customer.

How we read it. A positive step, but the $60 billion is a ceiling, not a committed order.

Why it matters to you: more companies are competing to build the chips AI runs on.

What this doesn't prove

Company filing: the $60 billion is a ceiling, not a committed order. Only 3.75 million shares vested at issue, based on initial purchase commitments. The rest vest with commercial arrangements, binding purchase orders and actual purchases.
