NiSource says Microsoft signed a 20-year power deal that adds about 1,100 MW for its Indiana campus

NiSource says Microsoft signed a 20-year deal from 2028 that adds about 1,100 MW of new power for its Indiana campus, with Microsoft paying for it.

On 16 October 2026 NiSource, the company that owns the northern Indiana electric utility NIPSCO, said it signed a 20-year energy agreement with Microsoft. The power is for Microsoft's data center campus in northwest Indiana, which was announced earlier. Microsoft is expected to start taking power in 2028.

To serve it, NiSource's power-plant arm will add about 1,100 megawatts of new generation (a megawatt measures how much electricity can flow at once). NiSource says Microsoft pays for all the generation and power lines needed for its data center. NiSource also lined up 600 megawatts of battery storage as part of the deal.

NiSource says current customers are protected from the costs of serving the data center, and it now expects total savings for its existing electric customers of about $1.75 billion over the life of its data center contracts. A Microsoft energy director said in the release that Microsoft wants to pay its own way so its data centers do not raise power prices for others.

Why we file it. By NiSource's account, a big cloud company is paying for new power under a long contract, so its data centers can grow.

How we read it. Microsoft stays green on the map. NiSource is not on our map, so no other color changes.

Why it matters to you: AI runs on electricity, and deals like this decide who pays for the new power plants, including whether your own power bill goes up.

What would change this: the 2028 start slipping, the deal being changed or cancelled, or state regulators raising problems with how costs are shared.

What this evidence does not establish

NiSource did not share the contract price or how much power Microsoft's campus will use. The new power joins a shared NiSource pool that also serves NIPSCO's other customers, so it is not one plant just for Microsoft. Service starts in 2028, so nothing is running yet. Microsoft is quoted in NiSource's release but did not post its own that we found. Share-price moves are not part of this signal.

What to watch next

  • Details NiSource shares on its third-quarter earnings call
  • Which new power plants and batteries get built for the pool, and when
  • Any Indiana regulatory filings tied to the agreement
  • Microsoft's own updates on the size and timing of its Indiana campus
