Banks sweeten the ~$5bn Volta AI loan to get it sold

Bloomberg says JPMorgan and Goldman sold the loan at 95 cents on the dollar, with yields past 11%, to reportedly fund Anthropic compute in Norway.

On 15 October 2026 Bloomberg reported, citing people with knowledge of the matter, that JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs hiked the yield and sweetened terms on a $5 billion leveraged loan for Volta Infrastructure Holdings, an AI cloud startup, and got it done. JPMorgan declined to comment; Goldman and Volta did not respond.

The loan sold at 6.5 percentage points over the benchmark rate and 95 cents on the dollar. It was first pitched at 6.25 to 6.5 points and 97 to 98 cents. Selling at a deeper discount means the buyers earn more, so yields went past the 11% the banks had floated.

The banks also added investor protections and a penalty if Volta repays early. The money funds a Norway data center run with Bitdeer, where Anthropic has signed a six-year compute agreement, according to earlier Bloomberg reporting.

We filed the original pitch on 5 October and said a flex, pull or downsize would be the next thing to watch. This is that flex: a deal repriced at a named company is an event, not just a market price.

Why it matters to you: borrowing money to build AI just got pricier, and over time that cost can show up in what AI tools cost to use.

How we read it: not a turning point, and a mark against infrastructure economics. The money was raised, so the build can go ahead, but only on costlier terms for a new, unrated borrower in a shaky week for AI debt.

What would change this: Volta or Anthropic confirming the deal and its terms, the loan trading well below where it sold, or other AI loans clearing easily at tighter prices.

What this evidence does not establish

Final terms come from anonymous sources reported by Bloomberg; the companies did not confirm them. No exact final yield or tranche split was reported, nor who took how much. Anthropic's role is earlier anonymous reporting. Unrated loan. Share-price moves excluded.

What to watch next

  • Any company confirmation of the final terms or of Anthropic as the customer at the Norway site
  • Where the Volta loan trades once it is free to trade
  • Whether other AI data center loans need the same sweeteners
