NVIDIA puts $3.5 billion into MediaTek bonds as the two chip designers expand their AI partnership

NVIDIA put $3.5 billion into zero coupon convertible bonds from MediaTek, and the two companies are expanding their AI computing partnership.

On 31 August 2026 NVIDIA, the main maker of AI chips, and MediaTek, a Taiwanese company that designs chips for phones, cars and other devices, said they are deepening their partnership. NVIDIA put $3.5 billion into convertible bonds issued by MediaTek, which are loans that can later turn into company shares. MediaTek will work with NVIDIA's NVLink Fusion ecosystem, which lets customers design their own AI chips that connect to NVIDIA's systems. MediaTek's offering circular shows a $3.9 billion issue of zero coupon bonds due 2031, convertible from 9 December 2026, with NVIDIA taking $3.5 billion and named as an anchor buyer. The circular gives the use of proceeds as procurement of raw materials in foreign currencies (NVIDIA press release, 31 August 2026, and MediaTek offering circular).

Why we file it. The biggest AI chip maker took $3.5 billion of the bonds of a chip designer it is partnering with on AI platforms.

How we read it. A large funding, but no chip orders or dates were given.

Why it matters to you: it shows how AI chip makers tie their plans together.

What this doesn't prove

Both companies' own documents. No chip orders or dates were given. The circular is MediaTek's (the issuer's) document. It names NVIDIA as an anchor buyer and gives the use of proceeds as procurement of raw materials in foreign currencies.
