SpaceX is in talks to borrow about $40bn to pay for NVIDIA chips
The FT and Bloomberg, citing people familiar, say Apollo is expected to lead a mix of bank loans and investment-grade debt. Bloomberg says the talks are early.
On 6 October 2026 the Financial Times reported that SpaceX is seeking about $40 billion to pay for NVIDIA chips. On 7 October Bloomberg, citing people familiar, said SpaceX is in talks with banks and investors to raise the money, which would be among the biggest-ever debt financings for the AI build-out.
As reported from the FT, the package would be about $10 billion of bank loans and $30 billion of investment-grade debt. Apollo Global Management is expected to lead and place the debt with a wide group of investors, and Pimco is among a small group of lenders in talks. The FT said the deal is expected to close in 2027.
Bloomberg said the talks are at an early stage and could end without a deal. Apollo and Pimco declined to comment, and SpaceX and NVIDIA did not respond.
The chips would feed the AI data centers of SpaceXAI, the former xAI, which SpaceX owns. We file it because two major outlets report the same deal from people familiar with it, and both companies are on the map.
Minor, and against infrastructure economics: money is available at investment-grade scale, but more of the build-out is being paid for with debt. Confidence medium, because the terms rest on unnamed sources and no deal is signed. No color changes.
What would change this: SpaceX or a lender confirming the deal, the debt launching or pricing, or the talks ending.
What this evidence does not establish
Talks, not a signed deal: Bloomberg says the talks are early and could end without a deal; the FT expects a close in 2027. The deal terms and lender roles come from people familiar, reported by the FT and Bloomberg; no company has confirmed them. Bloomberg's 'among the biggest-ever' line is its own framing. Bond and share-price moves are excluded.
What to watch next
- SpaceX, Apollo or NVIDIA confirming the financing
- Bank loans or investment-grade bonds launching, and at what size and price
- Talks ending, or the size or structure changing
