Sumitomo Electric infocommunications profit rises 19.1 billion yen on data center optics

Sumitomo Electric's infocommunications operating profit rose 19.1 billion yen to 27.2 billion yen, tied to data center optical connectors for generative AI.

On 31 July 2026 Sumitomo Electric, a Japanese cable maker, reported first-quarter infocommunications operating profit of 27.2 billion yen, up 19.1 billion yen from a year earlier. It cited more optical connectors and devices for data centers due to expansion of generative AI. For the group, first-quarter net sales were 1,330.6 billion yen and operating profit was 97.1 billion yen, against 60.3 billion yen a year earlier. It raised its full-year operating profit forecast to 450.0 billion yen from 425.0 billion yen because first-quarter results exceeded expectations (Sumitomo Electric supplementary sheet).

Why we file it. A cable maker ties its infocommunications profit to generative AI data center demand.

How we read it. A strong quarter, but the generative AI wording covers one segment and the forecast raise is for the whole group.

Why it matters to you: AI data center cables come from long-established industrial firms too.

What this doesn't prove

Company figures: the forecast is a company estimate. The company says it raised the forecast because first-quarter results exceeded expectations. The generative AI wording is in the infocommunications segment note only.
