Aurora Innovation

A Pittsburgh company that builds the Aurora Driver, a self-driving system for long-haul trucks. It runs driverless freight routes across the US Sun Belt and works with truck makers, a contract manufacturer and freight carriers rather than owning a large fleet itself.

Trucking is where autonomy has the clearest business case, because the route is a highway and the customer is a freight company counting cost per mile. Aurora is the furthest along in the US at removing the driver, but the numbers are still small: hundreds of thousands of driverless miles, not hundreds of millions, and the company is not profitable.

Freight carriers and shippers pay for autonomous trucking capacity, with Aurora moving toward selling the driver as a service on trucks built by partners.
