ASML says AI demand will outrun its planned chip-tool supply in 2027 and 2028
ASML says AI-driven demand means its planned tool supply won't fully meet customers' needs in 2027 or 2028, and some already want slots for 2030.
On 14 October 2026 ASML, the Dutch company that makes the machines used to print the most advanced chips, reported what it called record third-quarter sales of 11.7 billion euros and net income of 5.0 billion euros. It expects fourth-quarter sales of 14.2 to 15.2 billion euros.
The bigger news was about the future. ASML said its customers keep raising how much equipment they expect to need, mainly because of how big and how long-lasting they think AI spending will be. It now says the supply it has planned for 2027 and 2028 will not fully meet that demand. Some customers want to place orders for 2029 and even 2030.
A quick explainer: ASML is the only company that sells EUV lithography machines, which use extreme ultraviolet light to print the tiniest chip features. The most advanced chips are made with these machines, so ASML sees chip makers' plans years before the chips exist.
Why we file it. In July ASML said it planned to raise capacity by 30% for 2027 and was studying another 30% for 2028. Now it says that is not enough and is looking for more 2028 capacity. Its new site in Eindhoven won't finish its first phase until 2029, according to Reuters, so the near-term fix is upgrading existing machines and selling faster ones.
How we read it. ASML turns green on the map. This is the toolmaker at the very start of the chip chain saying AI demand is running ahead of supply two years out.
Why it matters to you: if the machines that make AI chips are sold out years ahead, AI chips may stay scarce and pricey, and that shapes how fast AI tools reach the apps you use.
What would change this: customers cutting their forecasts, orders slipping for two quarters, or export rules narrowing who ASML can ship to.
What this evidence does not establish
ASML did not size the shortfall, give a unit or backlog figure for 2027 or 2028, or say how much extra 2028 capacity it may add. Interest in 2029 and 2030 orders is not the same as booked orders. Customer forecasts can change. Share-price moves are not part of this signal.
