Mason County, Kentucky says Meta is behind a planned data center campus with a $10 billion initial investment

The county says the initial investment is $10 billion, and phase one is 396 MW. Meta calls it a potential project, and state incentives are pending.

On 13 October 2026 officials in Mason County, Kentucky, said Meta is the company behind a large data center campus planned near Maysville. A data center is a big building full of computers, and this kind (called hyperscale) is built for huge online services and AI. Local reports say who was behind it had been kept secret for more than a year. The county says Meta signed through a single-purpose company called Crisham LLC.

The county's governing board approved a deal with Meta's project company. According to a county news release, the initial investment is $10 billion, as part of a five-phase plan. A summary document dated 6 October, reported by the Lexington Herald-Leader, says phase one is one 396 megawatt data center on about 2,900 acres (a megawatt measures how much electricity can flow at once). It says that phase is forecast to start within 36 months of the agreement. The county says the project could represent up to $800 billion of capital investment over 40 years, but that is the county's possible maximum, not a commitment.

Meta confirmed it in a statement, calling it a potential project and saying it will pay the full cost of the power it uses. The county's top official said the deal still depends on state approval of tax incentives. The deal also gives Meta a long local property tax break in exchange for set yearly payments to the county and schools, and some residents oppose it.

Why we file it. The county has named Meta, a company on our map, as the company behind a new campus with a county-stated $10 billion initial investment and a 396 MW first phase.

How we read it. Meta stays green on the map. Nothing is built yet, so this is a plan, not new computing power.

Why it matters to you: the AI features in apps you use every day run in buildings like this, and where they go affects local jobs, taxes and power bills.

What would change this: the state turning down incentives, Meta pausing or shrinking the plan, or court challenges stopping the deal.

What this evidence does not establish

Meta calls this a potential project and has not posted its own release that we found. It still needs state incentive approval. Nothing will be built for up to three years, so no new capacity is online. The $800 billion figure is the county's possible maximum over 40 years and is not a commitment. Local lawsuits and opposition are pending. Share-price moves are not part of this signal.
