Samsung guides to a record of about $80bn in operating profit in one quarter

Samsung's preliminary guidance puts third-quarter operating profit at 107.4 trillion won, up from 12.17 trillion a year earlier, on sales of 195 trillion won.

Eight days after Micron reported a surging quarter, Samsung Electronics published its own number. In its earnings guidance on 8 October, Korea time, Samsung said it expects about 107.4 trillion won of consolidated operating profit for the three months to September, on sales of about 195 trillion won. The Korea Herald puts the profit at about 80 billion dollars.

Samsung gave the comparisons itself: 12.17 trillion won of operating profit on 86.06 trillion of sales a year earlier, and 89.49 trillion on 171.5 trillion in the second quarter. Yonhap puts the rise from a year earlier at 782.5 percent. Yonhap puts the margin at about 55.1 percent, the highest in the company's history. No Korean company had earned more than 100 trillion won of operating profit in a quarter before.

What Samsung did not say matters as much. The guidance is two lines, each the midpoint of a narrow range, with no breakdown by division, no net income and no commentary; full results come on 29 October. So the view that memory for AI data centers drove the quarter is an analyst view for now. Analysts quoted by the Korea Herald estimate the memory business alone earned about 110 trillion won, more than the whole company, offsetting losses in phones, consumer electronics and the foundry.

Why we file it: one of the nine conditions on this map asks whether gains in AI rest on earnings or on expectations. This is an earnings figure filed by the company, not a share-price move. It joins NVIDIA, Broadcom and Micron on that condition, though unlike their reported results it is still preliminary guidance, and it moves Samsung from no signal to green.

How we read it: Micron reported 54.2 billion dollars of revenue for its quarter to early September and said most of its 2027 high-bandwidth memory supply is already under agreement. Two of the largest memory makers have now put out surging quarterly figures within eight days. The limits are real: the figures are preliminary, nobody outside Samsung yet knows how much came from AI memory, and the rise reflects prices as well as volumes. TrendForce expects DRAM contract price rises to slow to 10 to 15 percent in the fourth quarter, from about 60 percent in the second. Higher memory prices are also a higher bill for everyone filling a data center with chips.

What would change this: full results on 29 October landing well away from the guidance, or showing memory earned much less than analysts assume; SK hynix describing a different picture; memory contract prices falling rather than slowing; or a named AI project delayed for lack of memory.

What this evidence does not establish

Preliminary guidance, the midpoint of a stated range, subject to change in full results on 29 October. Samsung gave no breakdown by division, so the share earned by memory, and by AI memory in particular, is an analyst estimate, not a disclosure. Samsung also sells phones, displays and other products, and the margin is for the whole company. The margin and percentage changes are calculated by Yonhap from Samsung's figures. Dollar figures are outlet conversions and move with the exchange rate. Share-price moves are excluded.

What to watch next

  • Samsung's full third-quarter results on 29 October: net income, the memory division's profit and any high-bandwidth memory detail
  • SK hynix third-quarter results, and whether they describe the same supply and price picture
  • DRAM and high-bandwidth memory contract prices in the fourth quarter: slowing rises, flat or falling
  • A named AI data center project or customer reporting a delay caused by a memory shortage
